Autism Awareness
March 31, 2011
Autism is a complex developmental disorder that affects individuals differently and to varying degrees. It typically alters a person’s ability to communicate and interact with others. Autism is considered a "spectrum disorder" with no proven cause.
The Autism Society has declared April National Autism Awareness Month and has been celebrating the occasion since the 1970’s to help raise awareness about the disorder.
April 2, 2011 marks the fourth annual World Autism Awareness Day to encourage early diagnosis and early intervention. It also brings together autism organizations all around the world, uniting them with one voice to inspire compassion, inclusion and hope for those with Autism.

Take Action
Autism Awareness Month provides educational events and activities as a way to increase awareness. How will you celebrate? Help spread understanding by posting your plans on the SmartEd Services Facebook page.
The Autism Society recommends the following:
Attend a "movievent." The Autism Society has partnered with Academy Award®-winning director Gerardine Wurzburgis to release the feature length documentary Wretches & Jabberers, featuring self-advocates with autism. The documentary is scheduled for release in April, 2011 through nationwide "movievents," which will include both a screening and a live panel discussion.
Watch a movie. Something that seems as simple as going to the movies is not an option for many families affected by autism. AMC Theatres and the Autism Society have teamed up to bring families affected by autism and other disabilities a special opportunity to enjoy their favorite films in a safe and accepting environment. These "Sensory Friendly Films" are offered on a monthly basis.
Connect with your community. Local Autism Society chapters often hold events throughout the month of April; find one near you on the Autism Society's Chapter Events Calendar. Can't find an event that fits your needs? The Autism Society suggests creating your own! The online tool 1Power4Autism can help you inspire friends and family to make a difference.
